SEO vs AEO: What a Small Business Should Do First
SEO (search engine optimization) helps your web pages rank and get clicked in Google. AEO (answer engine optimization) helps your business get named and described correctly in AI answers from tools like ChatGPT and Google's AI results. For most small businesses, the right order is SEO basics first, then AEO on top, because AI tools draw on the same foundations search engines use.
That's the short answer. Below is what's actually different, where they overlap, and a practical order of work.
What is the difference between SEO and AEO?
The simplest way to see it is side by side.
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank your pages and earn the click | Get your business named in the answer |
| Where it shows | Search results, Maps | ChatGPT, Google AI answers, Perplexity and similar |
| What the customer sees | A list of links | A written answer, often with few or no links |
| Main signals | Relevant pages, speed, links, reviews, Business Profile | Clear facts, structured data, consistent listings, mentions, reviews |
| How you measure it | Rankings, clicks, calls, form fills | Whether AI tools mention you, and how accurately |
They are not rivals. Think of SEO as making your business findable, and AEO as making it quotable.
Where do SEO and AEO overlap?
More than most articles admit. Work that helps both:
- A fast, mobile-friendly site. Slow pages hurt rankings and are harder for tools to read.
- One clear page per service. Each page says what you do, where and for whom.
- A complete Google Business Profile. Categories, hours, services, photos and replies to reviews.
- Consistent name, address and phone everywhere. Mismatched details confuse search engines and AI tools alike.
- Reviews that describe real work. "They fixed our walk-in cooler on a Sunday" says more than "great service."
If you only have time for one thing this month, pick from this list. It pays off twice.
What is unique to AEO?
A few things matter more for answer engines than for classic search.
Direct answers on the page
AI tools quote short, plain statements. A page that opens with "We repair commercial refrigeration in Columbus, Ohio, usually same day" is easier to use than one that opens with a slogan.
Structured data
Schema markup tells machines exactly what your business is, what you offer and where. It's invisible to visitors but useful to every tool that reads your site.
Mentions beyond your own site
AI tools look for agreement across sources. Listings in local guides, industry directories and partner sites give them more confidence to name you.
Checking the answers themselves
There is no AEO ranking report from Google. You have to ask the tools your customers' questions and record the results. More on that in what AEO is and why it matters.
What is unique to SEO?
Some SEO work matters less to AI answers but still drives real business:
- Titles and descriptions written to earn the click from a results page
- Maps ranking for "near me" searches, which still send a large share of local calls
- Technical cleanup like broken links, redirects and indexing problems
- Tracking calls and form fills from search so you know what's working
What should a small business do first?
Here's the order we recommend for most local businesses, whether you're in Columbus or Amman.
- Fix the foundation. Make sure the site loads fast on a phone, every service has its own page, and contact details are easy to find.
- Complete your Google Business Profile. Every field, real photos, correct hours.
- Clean up your listings. Same name, address and phone everywhere. Remove duplicates.
- Rewrite key pages to answer questions. Lead with a plain two-sentence answer, then the details.
- Add structured data. Business, services and FAQ schema.
- Start asking for detailed reviews. Make it easy with a direct link.
- Track both. Search rankings and calls monthly, plus a fixed list of AI questions.
Steps one through four are SEO work that AEO depends on. Steps five through seven tilt toward AEO. If you're a Columbus business, our local SEO checklist for Columbus, Ohio walks through the local pieces in detail.
Is AEO worth paying for separately?
It depends on how strong your SEO already is. If your site is slow and your listings are inconsistent, paying for AEO alone is like painting a wall with water damage. Fix the foundation first.
Once the foundation is solid, AEO is a modest extra layer. That's how we price it at Orbitronix: SEO plans are Starter at $400, Growth at $600 or Authority at $1,000 per month, and AEO is a $200 per month add-on. Every plan covers Google, Maps and AI answers, comes with a monthly report in plain language, and runs month to month with no lock-in. We'll also tell you if a plan won't pay off for your business. We'd rather say no than take money for work that doesn't help.
What results should you expect, and when?
Typically, foundation fixes show up in search within weeks to a few months. AI answers tend to follow more slowly, since the tools need to see consistent information across several sources. Anyone guaranteeing a ChatGPT mention by a date is guessing.
